IWhat is Internship in Computer Science at HCC?

What is the internship program?

The internship program is a structured way for students to gain work experience in computer-related positions (between 2-16 weeks) while students are still a student. It's a terrific way to acquire job-hunting and interviewing skills, practical work experience, and technical writing skills. It will also help students fatten the resume, make contacts, and earn money. When students finish, students will have created a marketable web presence that showcases their skills. Of course, this doesn't come without risk and extra work. Students will be competing for jobs with the fellow students, and there is no guarantee that students will be placed. Students will have to become actively involved in their placement and students will have to complete oral reports at the end of their experience.

What academic preparation do Students need to be admitted into the program?

·  Students must be Computer Science majors or Computer Science certificate seekers

·  Students should currently be taking and/or have completed between 15 and 60 credit hours.

·  Students should have a minimum grade point average of 2.50 in the field at time of application to the Internship program.

·  Students must complete the course assignments.

When should students apply to the internship program?

·  Transcripts must show that students are enrolled in courses necessary to complete the admission requirements.

·  If students are uncertain about their GPA, or whether students have the required courses, apply anyway. The professor will check these for students.

What happens during the work terms?

How long is the internship work period?

The total internship work period, comprised of several weeks will be:

·  minimum of 2 continuous weeks

·  maximum of 16 continuous weeks

How many employers will I work for?

·  Students will typically work for one employer for the total intern period.

·  However, students can work for up to four different employers (one for each four month term), as long as the work terms are contiguous.

·  The decision of the number of employers is usually up the student/employer, as jobs will be advertised for a 4, 8, 12, and 16 week duration.

·  In exceptional cases, if there is a particularly bad match between students and the employer, the two may negotiate (with the professor) to have students leave that job and be placed, if possible, with another employer.

What are the academic responsibilities during the Internship work periods?

On-the-job performance, based upon evaluations and interviews with the supervisor and intern. 20%

Completion of portfolio activities which should be thorough and well organized. 10%

Oral report which should be thorough, well-organized, clear, and complete. 10%
